Natural Dyeing 101: Hands-On Beginner Workshop at the Farmstead
What if your first step toward a slower, more intentional life started with something as simple as color?
Natural Dyeing with Black Walnuts is part of The Slow Living experience — hands-on, approachable workshops designed to help you reconnect with the land, your materials, and a more mindful, creative rhythm of life.
This beginner-friendly class is designed to give you clear, no-nonsense guidance on natural dyeing — without the overwhelm. You’ll be guided step-by-step through the process of turning black walnuts into rich, earthy colors on natural fibers:
Preparing yarn and other natural fibers for dyeing
Extracting color from black walnuts
Simple techniques for achieving long-lasting, beautiful shades
Tips for experimenting with your own yarns and fibers at home
Each participant leaves with a skein or two of hand-dyed yarn, plus the confidence and knowledge to continue exploring natural dyeing on your own. You’re welcome to bring your own fibers to dye as well!
We will be inside my workshop for the duration of class, however, dress appropriately as it is not heated. Participants will be standing for the duration of class as well. We’ll be working with rich, earthy black walnut dye — please wear something that you won’t mind getting stained!
Presented in a friendly, conversational manner, this workshop brings together Kristin’s hands-on experience from East Tennessee to the Catskills and back again. It’s the perfect introduction for anyone ready to explore the art of natural color and embrace the slower, more rooted lifestyle that comes with making beauty by hand. Workbook included. All materials and supplies are provided and light refreshments served.
