Editorial Work

Connecting People to Place, Culture, and Heritage

At The Farmstead by Chicken Librarian, editorial work is rooted in documenting the people, places, and practices that shape land-based living.

Through interviews, written features, and visual documentation, we capture the lived experiences of individuals and communities building meaningful, place-connected lives. Storytelling is central to this process—used as a tool to reveal the depth, nuance, and culture behind each subject.

Our work focuses on farms, makers, and rural entrepreneurs—particularly within regional food systems and the cultural landscapes of places like Southern Appalachia and beyond.

What We Do

  • Interviews & Conversations
In-depth, recorded conversations with individuals whose work and lives are rooted in land, craft, and place.

  • Written Features
Long-form and short-form editorial pieces that highlight people, processes, and the values behind their work.

  • Photography
Visual documentation of land-based culture, including farms, makers, and regional traditions such as barn quilts.

  • Digital Publication
Stories shared through blog content, video (including recorded interviews), and evolving editorial platforms.

  • Editorial & Pitch Work
Select stories are developed for and pitched to publications aligned with this focus.

Approach

Our work is observational and narrative-driven—grounded in presence, conversation, and lived experience. Rather than directing a story, we follow it—allowing each piece to reflect the character of the land and the people connected to it.

Collaborations

We collaborate with:

  • farms and agricultural producers

  • land-based and rural businesses

  • regional organizations and publications

  • makers, artisans, and individuals with compelling stories to share

The Goal

To create a body of editorial work that documents a more intentional, grounded way of living—while building a growing archive of voices connected to land, craft, and culture.
